I think we Americans would do well to check out what Canadians are doing about recycling. I just do not understand how we are sending our recycling goods to China when it can all be done very well here.
Canadians have recycling plants and are employing people with special needs to sort the items. Many more people can be employed here in the United States. There are so many products that can be made out of recycled goods. I just looked for rain barrels and chose a rain barrel that is made out of recycled products. Even old tires can be shredded down into new products.
Think of all the glass bottles that are now being thrown in the trash because we are not shipping them to China. We have got to stop giving China jobs that need to be done here in America. Not only that but wine, beer, and liquor bottles are recycled up in Canada. In fact, the Liquor Control Board pays people to return empty beer, wine, and liquor bottles. I forget now what the costs are but it certainly had people checking out ditches, garbage cans, and grassy areas for the bottles. In fact, many organizations would collect the empties as a fund raising project. They would go to people’s homes and ask for their empties. Many people gladly gave them to the organization and these organizations could easily profit over $500 in one afternoon.
It just floors me that we have items that could easily be repurposed and recycled into usable products and we are shipping these items to China. Abandoned factories could be repurposed into recycling plants. This would then translate into jobs. It would also encourage less trash all around. I am not sure how to get people thinking about this but I think it would be a win-win all around.
